The Andhra Pradesh government has partnered with Cisco to attain this objective and on Thursday a MoU was signed by them to inaugurate the ‘AP FiberNet’ project in Visakhapatnam.
The ‘AP FiberNet’ project of Andhra Pradesh is India’s first statewide broadband project. Under this project, the AP government is planning to extend internet connections in the districts of Vishakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam at cheaper rates. The aim is to cover these districts by April and then expand the service to the rest of the state by the end of July this year.
The internet connection plan offered by this project will be different for households and offices. The households will be provided with a 15Mbps broadband connection for Rs 149 per month and the offices will be offered 100Mbps broadband connection for Rs 999 per month.
The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu, said that this project has been undertaken with an aim to promote digitalization in all the households of the state and also as a part of the Digital India campaign. He also said that digital transformation is the most effective way to promote sustainable growth and improvement in the society. And keeping all these views in mind, the Andhra Pradesh government has launched its ‘AP FiberNet’.
The overhead fiber net cable will be set up through Electrical poles in place of underground cables so as to save the cost of laying these cables.
John T Chambers, the Executive chairman of Cisco, said that the company will be setting up an Internet of Everything (IoE) Innovation Centre in Vishakhapatnam. These centers will be set up to provide regional innovation and will also allow partners and startups to develop solutions around Internet of Everything (IoE) and will also engage in fast prototyping.
The ‘AP FiberNet’ project has only been launched in Vishakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam, but by July the entire state will be able to access the cheaper broadband service.
