Get hired on Whatsapp from home: Gone are the days when interviewers would come to the campus to recruit students for Internship. In this technologically advanced era the tradition of live interview is gradually being replaced by a faster, easier and a better way of recruitment which is Online Interview.
The trend of online interview has just started becoming popular and these interviews were only restricted to social networking platforms like Linkedln, Twitter, Facebook and Skype, but quite recently few students of the Xavier Institute of Communication, Mumbai, were marveled when they were added to a WhatsApp group called ‘The Internship’ and were interviewed in that group by their future employer. This act was not only shocking for the students who were interviewed but also for the public at large, because this was the first time when the Instant Messaging App, WhatsApp, was used for recruitment purpose.
According to the Gurgaon-based creative director the most creative way of interviewing the candidates is to interview them in a place where they are most comfortable in and keeping this in mind he chose WhatsApp as his interviewing platform. The other benefit of online interviewing via WhatsApp, as stated by the creative director, is that it avoids the cost, time and energy spent on travelling.
In this interview, the candidates were given some tasks which would judge their creativity, skill and their impulsiveness. One of these tasks was to make memes on the ‘Be like Bill’ series and Sai Padwal, a student who got selected for internship, said that this way of recruitment was new and exciting and it allowed him and his fellow mates to give their interview comfortably and with ease. Through this interview the advertising agency hired all the six students as their interns.
A senior creative director of JWT, Bodhisatwa Dasgupyta, who had interviewed the students said that the traditional way of sending in Resumes and Bio-data are not the reliable ways of judging the creativity of the candidate and of knowing what he/she is actually capable of. He also said that a person performs best when they are in their comfort zone and therefore with the help of the social platform he could interact with the students keeping them in their comfort level.
Though the use of WhatsApp as an interviewing platform is an advanced and an efficient idea, yet it cannot be used in interviewing tech profiles in institutes like IITs. Some of the institutes like IIT Bombay make use of social sites like Google Hangout and Skype for their interviews.
Online interviews provide for a comfortable and an easier way of selecting candidates rather than live interviews. In the Skype and video interviews candidates are judged on the basis of their posture, demeanor, clothing, voice and on the basis of all the other factors which are taken into consideration during live interviews.
Apart from WhatsApp the other interfaces which are used for interviews are, Skype, Google Hangouts and the other social networking sites include Linkedln, Twitter, and Facebook.
