The new widget seems to be powered by Google’s Measurement Lab tools. In 2009 Google introduced Measurement Lab as the public service with the aim to conduct the tests on the ISP’s practices and performance for the research purposes. Now the company looks to leverage those tools that provide speed test results directly in the Google Search.
This development was firstly spotted by Dr. Pete Meyers, who also tweeted a screenshot of the search result. The widget claims to run test in less than 30 seconds and transfer less than 40MB of the data for most users. In selected regions this feature appears to be in testing, as widget did not show in the search results. Till yet it is not confirmed that when the company plans to roll out it commercially.
This seems a yet another effort by the Google to stop the users from going to the third party sites to perform various functions. With its own products and services Google tries to answer more and more queries like showing the current time in the different zones and converting time.
The search giant also gives the full lyrics to a song in the search result with its Google Play Music link at the end. These lyric sites have already injured due to ad-blockers and lyric licenses and now the Google push of its own products in the search may be just further exacerbate the issue.
