UE Boom 2 Portable Bluetooth Speaker Review: The Ultimate Ears Boom Bluetooth speaker was a unique product and it brought the Logitech-owned company to fore as a capable manufacturer of the personal audio equipment. It was quite expensive but it won the approval from experts and buyers everywhere. Today we are going to give the review of its successor i.e. the UE Boom 2.
UE Boom 2 Portable Bluetooth Speaker Review
In India, nearly a year ago it was launched globally but the speaker was unveiled only last month at the price of Rs. 15,995. There are some improvements over its predecessor and in our review we have explored these improvements in depth.
The UE Boom 2 retains the look of original Boom and that is a good thing. For this speaker there are rather some interesting colour options and we loved our green and blue review unit. The device has the tube-like design, with the fabric cover over the speakers and along one side there is a rubber strip that wraps around the top and bottom.
With an IPX7 rating the UE Boom 2 is waterproof that will allow you to submerge it entirely for up to around 30 minutes at a depth of 1m. We tested this, and we are happy to say that the speakers works fine even after being submerged into the water. At the bottom the ports are sealed off but if you accidentally forget to seal these and water gets inside it then there is no way for it reach and damage the speaker drivers.
At the top it consists of function and power buttons, while the volume buttons are along the side. But, unfortunately these are the physical buttons and they require some effort to press. The touch sensitive buttons would have been a lot better considering the design of the speakers.
At the bottom it has 3.5mm socket for the wired connections and the Micro-USB port for charging. During normal use both of these are sealed with the rubber flaps just to ensure the waterproofing. For the best sound the speaker is meant to be used upright and plugging in either a charger or an auxiliary cable at the bottom means that it will have to be placed horizontally. In this orientation it has neither stable nor sounds as good.
There is no pause or play button on the UE Boom 2 so you have to lift the speaker and lightly tap at the top. It weighs 544g and it has frequency response range of 90-20,000Hz. Along with the two passive radiators there are two 45mm active drivers.
There is also an app for Android and iOS that will let you control volume, alarms, settings and equalizer on the speaker, also including the applying and downloading firmware updates. With a firmware update Ultimate Ears has recently announced Siri and Google Now integration with the firmware update but the update had not yet been delivered. However, the app is easy to use and it is well designed and that is definitely worth downloading on your phone if you buy the new Boom 2.
With the Boom 2 Ultimate Ears has a great product on its hands. It looks good and sounds great and it is waterproof also and making it ideal for the outdoor use. Although, the controls are a little bit bothersome and it will be better if you use your smartphone to control speaker. The pros far the outweigh the cons with this product.
With the price tag of Rs. 15,995, the Boom 2 is definitely on the expensive side. However, the open, clean and capable sound does justify the price to some extent. This speaker looks fantastic and it would not be defeated by the elements. It is definitely worth considering if you are looking at buying the new premium wireless speaker.
